Verifying a domain

Prove you control a domain with a DNS TXT record before Verisight assesses it.

Before Verisight sends a single request to a domain, you must prove you control it. This protects you and everyone else: nobody can point Verisight at a domain they don't own.

Add the record

  1. Open Settings → Domains.
  2. Enter the domain (for example example.com, not a URL and not an IP address) and choose Add.
  3. Verisight shows the record to publish:
Field Value
Type TXT
Name / Host _verisight-challenge.example.com (many DNS providers want just _verisight-challenge)
Value verisight-domain-verification=<your token>
  1. Create the record at your DNS provider (Cloudflare, Route 53, GoDaddy, your registrar…).
  2. Back in Verisight choose Check DNS record. When the record is found, the domain shows as verified.

You can also verify while authorising an assessment. The Domain ownership panel on the assessment offers the same Verify ownership step.

Subdomains

A verified domain covers all its subdomains. Verifying example.com lets you assess www.example.com, shop.example.com and so on.

Keep the record published

Ownership is re-checked live:

  • when you order an assessment for the domain;
  • every time you authorise an assessment;
  • before every scheduled monitoring run.

If the record has been removed, the order or authorisation is refused, and monitoring is paused with a notification to your organization. A temporary DNS outage on your side only skips that one run.

Troubleshooting

The check keeps failing

  • DNS changes can take a few minutes, or longer if your provider has a high TTL. Wait and try again.
  • Make sure the host doesn't end up doubled, as in _verisight-challenge.example.com.example.com. If your provider appends the domain automatically, enter only _verisight-challenge.
  • The value must be the whole string including verisight-domain-verification=, with no quotes added by you.
  • Check from your own machine: dig TXT _verisight-challenge.example.com +short
